RNA localization in development and disease

Eukaryotic cells are not cluttered bags full of loose items. The interiors of cells are highly organized and full of strategically placed compartments and distinct locations. Like many molecules, RNAs are carefully localized to these various compartments; 70% or more of RNAs have a favorite location they like to be in, such as the ER, mitochondria, peroxisomes, and other places. In the Norris lab, we study RNAs that go to cell protrusions. We know that certain RNAs must go to protrusions for cells to migrate properly. But which localized RNAs are most important for cell migration? How do the RNAs get out there? And what do they do once they arrive?

Using mammalian cell culture and mice, we apply a wide range of techniques (especially gene expression analyses and light microscopy) to study the who, how, where, when and why of RNA localization. We aim to understand RNA localization from the level of individual molecules all the way up to their role in embryology and disease.
